James Rae is a Professor in the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of St Andrews. His research focuses on reconstructing past climate change to better understand its driving mechanisms. He is particularly interested in the causes of recent glacial-interglacial cycles and climate evolution across the Cenozoic. To explore these periods, he utilizes geochemical measurements of fossils, sediments, water, and ice, with a specialized focus on using boron isotope proxies to determine past pH levels. Professor Rae interprets these data using a variety of numerical models. Additionally, he investigates biomineralization processes in corals and foraminifera, exploring the insights geochemistry provides into calcification and ocean acidification.
